Broken and Stupid
I’m a veteran of the Louisiana Army National Guard. I drove a Bradley Fighting Vehicle for the company commander in a mechanized infantry unit and, consequently, spent a lot of time on the radio fielding calls for him. An essential part of protocol was keeping all transmissions brief, clear, and to the point. When you could not understand the other party because the transmission quality was garbled, the appropriate reply was “You’re coming in broken and distorted.”
I have taken an adaptation of that phrase into my civilian life. When I see a friend speaking or behaving in a foolish manner I warn, “You’re coming in broken and stupid.”

Yes indeed, the whole Democrat Party has wagered on an American defeat in Iraq. So what happens if we (America) win? John Fund speculates….he even suggest that some evidence of WMD may arise……hmmmmmm.

It’s true that the Democrats are betting on the defeat in Iraq, and Republicans on victory. But if history is an indicator, both sides could be in for a huge surprise. In 1944 Democrats won big by painting their Republican opponents as defeatists and not committed enough to Allied victory. In 1946, Republicans won big AFTER a decisive Allied victory. Same thing happened to Churchill immediately after V Day.
Same thing could happen now, with Iraq war. If Americans win big, say, next year, a Democrat might be elected, because people will say, ”all right, the war is over, we don’t need those war-obessed Republicans anymore”. But if the Iraq War is still on in 2008, people will elect the most right-wing Republican available, saying ”we need someone who will kick ass and finish this war once and for all”.
Vietnam War is another example. Despite all anti-war demonstrations, voters kept electing pro-war candidates from Johnson in 1964 to Nixon in 1968 and 1972. It was only after Nixon withdrew from Vietnam in 1973 and declared victory (a bit prematurely) that the Americans elected peacenik Democrats in 1974.
So if Dems were really smart, they would pray for victory. Republicans have it much easier. They can simply be incompetent about fighting this war, but as long as the Democtrats refuse to attack them FROM THE RIGHT on that issue, they will keep being reelected. It’s a win-win situation for them…
The only solution (for Dems): start attacking Bush for not killing enough insurgents in Iraq, for being too timid, for not torturing enough Al Quaeda terrorists. Unless they do THAT, they will keep loosing elections…
